What is Engraving?

Engraving is a highly traditional craft that provokes a message of prestige and timelessness. This specialized method creates raised areas of print or images on paper, including business cards, stationery and invitations.

In the 15th century, modern engraving was born as intaglio, a method of cutting lines into and below the surface of metal.  The unique “feel” of intaglio raised printing is the result of an impression created on a metal plate which is filled with opaque ink. When paper is pressed into the plate, raised and colored areas are created.

A key characteristic of engraved printing is a raised ink surface, with an indentation –  or bruise – on the back.
